Musings for March 22, 2008

This May will mark 4 years since okclesbian.com was launched. When some friends and I talked about starting this web site, I said that I would write a column for awhile, until other people in the community got on board and wrote. It's coming up on 4 years and I've realized that I've been writing this column far longer than I had envisioned.

Writing this column has been therapeutic, fun, and hard. I know people have read them but yet sometimes, I thought I was my own audience. One response from a reader helped me more than she'll ever know during my journey of healing. When I started writing this column, I never envisioned getting as much out of it as I have.

During the last couple of weeks, I realized that it's time that I change gears a bit when it comes to this web site. There are lots of things I would like to do differently with this site but writing a column every week leaves me little time for doing some of the changes I feel would benefit this site (add to it that I work as a geek for a living and sometimes I'm just tired of being in front of the computer and when "The L Word" is on, I write 2 columns). Additionally, the whole Sally Kern thing made me realize that I need to do more, both as an individual and as an active person in the LGBT community. We are down to 2 "media" sources for information here in OKC since Rob at gayokc.com quit updating his site regularly. The readership at Hard News is geared towards the men in the LGBT community and I think there could be more done for the women of the community in terms of getting information out (I realize that it's not everyone's cup of tea to join the yahoo group or myspace).

Having said all of that, this will be my last column. I don't want to say that I'm taking a sabbatical or anything like that as I do feel that my energy with regards to this web site is going to be focused on other areas and hopefully areas that you will all find more beneficial to the community. If you have any suggestions, drop me a line as I would love to hear them. If you want to contribute your time, writing talents, etc., let me know.

I leave you with words that I feel give the most powerful message for change:

"Now renegades are the people with their own philosophies
They change the course of history
Everyday people like you and me"

---Rage Against the Machine

Until next time.
