Musings for February 16, 2008

I've been hearing some new terms lately when it comes to lesbians. There's the "weekend lesbians"--those who go to clubs, and not necessarily lesbian clubs, and make out with other women and "lug," which is a lesbian until graduation. Apparently a lug will go as far as having a girlfriend while in college.

I look back at my experiences in college and in my 20's and I know of no such women who did the weekend lesbian thing or who were lugs (granted, I didn't live in the dorms when I transferred to a 4-year school so maybe some of that was going on back in the mid-90's.) Perhaps if I had encountered a weekend lesbian or a lug, I would have come to terms and come out sooner than I did at the ripe old age of 32.

What I find really curious about all of it is the fact that today's society is a lot more open and accepting of gays and lesbians compared to when I was in my 20's (which was 20 years ago). I think one can look at a weekend lesbian or a lug as someone who is either questioning or afraid of coming totally out as a lesbian. The thing is, I hope it's just the questioning that's going on with them because I'd hate the thought of someone who is open to such an extent but who is too afraid of taking that next step to being totally honest with themselves, especially since society's mind is a lot more open than it was 20 years ago.

Until next time.
