Musings for May 12

There's an important birthday coming up in a few days--May 15th to be exact. It's the birthday of okclesbian.com. Hard to believe that it's been 3 years since this web site was launched.

When I first starting thinking about starting a web site, I envisioned lots of women wanting to write for the site, lots of activities like book clubs, supper clubs, etc.--all of which I thought would happen right away. But as I was to learn, everything takes time and patience and even though at times it seemed like the vision I had was never going to come to reality, I kept plugging away because I refuse to give up on something I believe in. Then finally, after more than 2 1/2 years, things started to happening.

The ladies in the yahoo group started talking about the supper club idea and after the first one, things really started to roll. We've had multiple dinners outside of the Lez Eat night, a kickball game, a game night, a dessert night and we're currently planning a BBQ that will have a pig leg jousting competition (I kid you not). And those are just *some* of the activities--the women are constantly throwing out suggestions and most all of them have been embraced enthusiastically.

Things haven't happened the way that I thought they would--I would have thought by now that more women would be writing for the site and that I wouldn't be anymore--that I would have moved into the role of maintaining the site. Things took a lot longer than I had thought and we're definitely doing activities that I never dreamed of--and it's a wonderful thing that things didn't happen the way that I thought and hoped that they would--I think it would have been more boring if they had.

One of the things that I think is utterly amazing is the inclusiveness that I've seen among the women who attend the Lez Eat supper club and other activities. Too often in our community, there are cliques of people and outsiders don't feel very welcomed. I think I can say with some degree of certainty that most of us have felt it at some point from the different organizations just in the OKC metro area. I can guarantee you that the group of women in the yahoo group is different and different is always good.

So again, I encourage everyone to join the yahoo group and check out the Lez Eat supper club. I can't say enough about the women in there and hate to think that there are women in our community who are missing out. I think things are going to continue to be very exciting as okclesbian.com enters its 4th year.

Until next time.
