Musings for March 31

Technology is a wonderful thing and at the same time, it can be a pain in the arse. I know that's kind of an odd thing to be hearing from someone whose career is very much in the technology area but it's true. We have people who are rude and don't pay attention driving while talking on their cell phones (I'm not even going to go into how disturbing it is when I hear someone talking on their cell phone while in the loo). When technology breaks, it's become obvious that people forget the old manual way of doing things (for example, at my job--when the automated process at work breaks, the "old way" is to fax stuff out but people gripe).

Overall, progress in technology has been wonderful and one of the best examples I can give is the OKCLesbian Yahoo group. Without technology, the awesome group of women in there wouldn't have met and have been able to share life's joys and tears. It's a diverse group of women in there--all different ages and backgrounds, some life-long Okies and some recent transplants, some singles and some couples. It's a very different mix but we all have a few things very much in common--we're women living in Oklahoma who like to have fun oustide of the bar scene (not saying that none of us go to the bars but we want ways to socialize outside of the bars and churches).

It was the women in the Yahoo group who organized the first Lez Eat and we had 16 show up for the first one and had 26 at the last one. Not everyone who comes is a member of the Yahoo group and that's a great thing because we want people to feel welcomed. But those who are in the Yahoo group and who talk on pretty much a daily basis go beyond Lez Eat and we've been doing lots of things because we have fun together. We now have a regularly scheduled "Pre-Lez Eat" because we don't want to wait once a month to get together and eat. Tonight we're having our first Lez Games--a game night at someone's house. We were going to have a Lez Kickball game this weekend but with the soggy conditions and the aches and pains of our bodies (we may play young but we're not stupid:-)---we're rescheduling. And the last couple of times Iris played at Partners since the first Lez Eat, a bunch have gone together to hear Iris play.

So if you're looking for something else to do, looking for new people to meet, check out the Yahoo group. Hope to see you in there.

Until next time.
