Musings for March 10

One night this week, I came home after dark and someone had a fire going in their fireplace and I could smell the wood smoke. I stopped walking just so I could breathe in the scent of it and just the smell took me back to a simplier time in life, back when I was a teenager. Living "in the country" while in high school, the thing to do on the weekend was to go find somewhere to gather and lots of times, it was in a field or in the woods somewhere and we'd build a fire and sit around talking and drinking beer if someone was able to find someone to buy it. I loved the whole atmosphere--the clear crisp night, no lights except for the stars and the moon, the smell of the fire and laughter among friends. Back then we were young and didn't have a care in the world. It's a shame sometimes that we don't have more of that as adults.

Just having those few moments this week of smelling the smoke from the fire and thinking about that simplier time in life was very refreshing, especially since things have been pretty hectic lately. It really is important to stop and smell our own roses.

Until next time.
