Bad News: February 11th, 2005, the CDC announced that there was a new strain of HIV that had been located in a person in New York. Its strain has not been previously seen.
Worse News: it is resistant to three of the four types of antiviral drugs that combat the disease.
New problem: the only drug that it seems not to be resistant to is called Enfuvirtide, sold under the trade name Fuzeon. It costs $20,000, requires 2 injections a day and takes 20 minutes to mix.
HIV and AIDS is a real problem. Let's not become so complacent that we re-enter the world of 1980's and have to bury scores of our brothers and sisters………………
